Maine: from ocean to desert

By Lisa Mehler

After much discussion about visiting our most northeastern state, my parents and I recently packed up our minivan and journeyed to Maine on vacation.

The trip began with an eight-hour drive to Hartford, Conn., where we stayed the night to break up the excursion. After settling into our room at a Holiday Inn Express, we did some research in hopes of going on a whale watch in Maine. That is, we saw "Finding Nemo" at a local theater. It's a fun movie, by the way, with just enough adult humor to keep grown-ups interested.

After a good night's sleep, we continued to our final destination. With my nose in a book as we drove, time flew by. Before I knew it, we had pulled into the driveway of the Harraseeket Inn in Freeport, Maine.

While looking for a handicapped-accessible place to stay, my folks came across the inn while reading a AAA tour book. They were pleased with its reasonable rates, in spite of its AAA Four-Diamond rating.

The establishment has an air of opulence while maintaining a cozy feel that welcomes its guests and makes them sad to leave. Fireplaces can be found throughout the inn, including the dining rooms, lobby and drawing room.

The best part of the Harraseeket, however, is its staff. Everyone is very friendly and eager to help guests have an enjoyable stay. Daily breakfast and afternoon tea, both included in the guest rate, were a pleasurable experience.
