Tragedy has struck again for Jane McKinney and Scott Randall and their families.

In December 2001, the couple's 3-year-old daughter Samantha Lynn Randall died in a fire at their mobile home in West Salem Township. Scott Randall, who had escaped the blaze, went back inside the trailer and was severely burned trying to save the little girl, state police fire marshal Robert Ryhal said at the time.

Ms. McKinney also got out that morning, clinging to the couple's 18-month-old son, Sean Michael Randall.

On Sunday night, 3-year-old Sean drowned in an above-ground swimming pool at his grandfather's home in Reynolds.

Mercer County Deputy Coroner Cris Loutzenhiser pronounced Sean dead at 9:50 p.m. in the emergency room of UPMC Horizon, Greenville.

The tot was found at about 9 p.m., floating face down, by his grandfather, Mike McKinney, who was baby-sitting at his home at 1301 Arlington Drive, Pymatuning Township.

Sean, who lived on Chestnut Street in Jamestown, had unlatched a gate to get to the 4-foot-deep pool, Loutzenhiser said.

When police arrived, McKinney was administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation, which was continued by police and firefighters.

Attempts to revive the boy at the hospital were unsuccessful.

Pymatuning Township police said McKinney lost sight of Sean momentarily. When McKinney went to check on him, he found the boy in the pool, they said.

"It is the case of an unattended child who accidentally fell into a pool," Loutzenhiser said.

He said Sean was unattended for perhaps five or 10 minutes.
