Fallen firefighter Barr laid to rest with procession

Shawn Ferry, a lieutenant in the Howland Volunteer Fire Department, chatted with some fellow fire officials as he waited for the fire truck carrying the body of his fallen comrade to pass through the town square.

Ferry, also president of Trumbull County Firefighters' Association and assistant fire chief for Gustavus Fire Department, said he had known Capt. Daniel E. Barr, a 20-year member of the Hubbard Volunteer Fire Department, for five years and had talked to him on occasion.

"He was a heck of a guy, simply put," Ferry said. "He was easy to talk to."

Barr, 49, of 60 Hager St., was killed after police said a pickup truck pulled into the path of his motorcycle at around 9 a.m. Sunday on Chestnut Ridge Road.

Barr was on his way to the yearly fire department picnic when the accident occurred.
