Striking workers hang in

Under the heat of a blazing afternoon sun, striking Wheatland Tube worker Chris Stull and his wife Becky stood in line Sunday waiting for food.

As the Brookfield Township couple inched toward tables piled high with burgers, hot dogs, soda, baked goods and more, they talked about how the strike has affected their family life.

Though Stull said he sympathizes with those who are suffering, he was adamant that no matter how long the strike goes on, he would stay strong.

"I feel bad for anybody that has any type of economic hardship," he said, adding that "I'd rather see them shut that plant down than see them go back under (Wheatland Tube Vice President) Billy Kerins' stipulations."

"You tell (it), baby," said Mrs. Stull, giving her husband of five years a sweet smile.

The Stulls were among hundreds who showed up at Mercer County Shrine Club picnic grounds for United Steelworkers Local 1660's second solidarity rally.

It has been 13 weeks since Stull and hundreds of steelworkers walked off their jobs and on to the picket line, but judging by Sunday's crowd, most of the workers seem as steadfast as ever.
