Rainy weather fouls up fair's opening night

By Jeff Greenburg

Vic Zigo arrived at the 33rd annual Jefferson Township Fair just before 5 p.m. Tuesday, minutes before it was scheduled to open.

Zigo, 72, of Mercer, was particularly interested in heading toward the exhibit barn on the Jefferson Township Municipal Fairgrounds, 7407 Lamor Road, to see how the antiques and produce he was exhibiting matched up against the competition.

Unfortunately for Zigo, who was joined by his wife Bernadine, the barn was closed tight, as were the mud-soaked empty midway grounds. And Zigo could only lament as the fair became one of the countless victims of the windy, wet and wild weather that has pummeled Mercer County in recent days.

"I look forward to competing and naturally I'm disappointed," Zigo said. "I wanted to go up and see how I did. But I do feel bad for the fair people in general. They put a lot of work in this. Even the people that grow stuff, they work hard to have the best. Now you come out here and it's very disappointing. But you can't do anything about the weather."
