4 bridges damaged
by flood waters

With July rain heavier than many residents have seen in years, it's not surprising that a few of Mercer County's bridges would be affected in some way.

Mercer County Bridge Engineer Mark Miller told county Commissioners Kenneth A. Seamans and Olivia M. Lazor Wednesday that several bridges suffered some minor damage from the substantial rains that measured as much as 8 inches in less than 24 hours in some parts of the county.

"We had four bridges that received a small amount of damage -- one of them is more significant than the others -- that we've discovered so far," Miller said.

Those bridges are on Colt Road in Transfer, Hamburg Road in Hempfield Township and Ball Park and Clay Furnace roads in Jefferson Township.

"Typically it's all washout damage from water running off the roadway and eroding the material behind the wing walls," Miller said.
