A Hermitage family using a gas-operated generator to power appliances was overcome by carbon monoxide gas early Wednesday, police said.

Michael Ludwig, 44, his wife Susan, 47, and their daughter Stacy, 19, were taken to the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System, police said. By Wednesday evening, a nursing supervisor said Michael and Stacy Ludwig had been released, while Susan Ludwig remained hospitalized in stable condition.

Hermitage firefighters and police responded to an 8:13 a.m. call to the Ludwigs' home at 720 Lyle Drive. Jim Reda, deputy fire marshal, said when firefighters arrived the level of carbon monoxide gas was high throughout the house. Carbon monoxide is a deadly gas. It is invisible and has no fumes.

The neighborhood had been without power from Tuesday's storm and the Ludwigs used a the generator to power their appliances, authorities said. The generator, which was in a garage, apparently leaked carbon monoxide fumes into the house through the rafters, police said.
