Who will pay if trucks tear up streets, council asks

By Kristen Garrett

Anyone who has driven around the streets of downtown Sharon has probably noticed a large number of tractor-trailers and a lot of damage at Connelly Boulevard and Dock Street and elsewhere.

City Councilman George Gulla said Thursday he became concerned about further damage to streets after he learned PennDOT issued a permit to Duferco Farrell Corp. to carry heavier-than-normal loads.

The permit allows trucks to carry up to 125,000 pounds instead of the typical 40,000 pounds, Gulla said. He said the company is supposed to ask the city for permission to carry the extra weight through town and no one has done that.

Gulla said city streets are suffering because of all the truck traffic, and it's going to cost $200,000 to fix the intersection at Dock and Connelly. PennDOT initially said it wouldn't pay for the repairs but further meetings have been set to discuss who will cover the costs.
