War hero helped to lead fellow G.I.s to safety

George Aspromatis will be among millions of Americans marking the 50th anniversary of the end of the Korean War.

On July 27, 1953, hostilities came to an end when a cease-fire was signed by the United States, North Korea and China. And ceremonies all over the country, including one in Mercer County, are scheduled to remember the end of what is often called "The Forgotten War."

Aspromatis plans to attend a ceremony at 4 p.m. today at the Reynolds Veterans of Foreign Wars pavilion on Edgewood Drive. It will feature remarks from Mercer County Veterans Affairs Director Gary Solander, a retired colonel, and Greenville Mayor Cliff Harriger, a World War II veteran who was recalled during the Korean War but didn't have to go overseas.

"We knew the anniversary was coming up and the national VFW recommended all VFWs try to do something special on that day," said Reynolds Post 7599 Cmdr. Tom Hanzes. "So we just decided to do something."
