Festival re-creates
way of life in 1800s

A train of little children sitting in blue bucket seats went by on a gravel path as Rick Veverka of Jamestown demonstrated the art of sharpening knives -- the old-fashioned way.

Using an instrument resembling an old spinning wheel, Veverka pumped his feet up and down, causing the foot-powered grinder to rotate as he sharpened his knife blade.

"My only problem is, I'm running out of things to sharpen," Veverka said with a smile.

Veverka, owner of Family Tree Crafts in Jamestown, joined many crafters and vendors at the onset of the Pymatuning Pioneer and Art Festival at Pymatuning State Park.

The 10th annual festival, sponsored by the Jamestown Historical Society, got off to a good start. Throngs of people flocked onto the festival grounds Saturday.
