Local moms have breastfeeding support

By Kristen Garrett
Herald Staff Writer

Just because it's a natural process doesn't mean that breastfeeding mothers don't need help and support to give their babies the best possible care.

Locally there are places mothers can turn to find guidance and support when caring for their new babies: the Lactation Center at the UPMC Woman Care Center and La Leche League.

Laurie Joanow is a health education/lactation counselor for UPMC Horizon. She said the Lactation Center teaches breastfeeding classes for expectant parents, provides phone information and literature and offers face-to-face breastfeeding consultations for new mothers who may need guidance.

Mrs. Joanow said there are common problems associated with breastfeeding such as a child that won't "latch on." She said they also work with mothers who have to work to teach them how to continue to breastfeed their baby and talk to their employers about what they need, such as a private place to nurse or pump breast milk.
