Shenango Twp. takes brunt of latest fury

Community leaders continued to wade through flood damage Monday, a day after heavy rain again inundated the Shenango Valley.

Particularly hard hit was Shenango Township, which saw a significant amount of water damage to an area of state Route 18, about a mile south of the West Middlesex school complex.

Township Supervisor Chairman Larry Robinson said the West Middlesex Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6233, one of the West Middlesex Little League fields near it, as well as Wilmington Oil Co., Inc. and Curic Construction across the road, sustained significant damage.

One of the two ballfields in the flood's path, VFW 2, was "really damaged," said West Middlesex Little League President Bob Rodenbaugh.

The water washed away the entire creek bank near the field, knocking down the field's fence while piling mud, tree limbs and rocks all over the place, he said.

"It's going to take a lot of work to get it cleaned up," he said, adding the league had planned to host a tournament in the next week or two, but will have to cancel it.

Rodenbaugh, 64, of Shenango Township, said he's been involved with the league for 32 years, and "has never seen damage like that."

As for the road situation, Robinson said Campground Road "was a real mess" and closed to everything but local traffic. Robinson said PennDOT closed Wheatland Road Monday night, but he was uncertain why. Other roads affected were state Route 318 and Bedford Road.

"Just about every road in the township" had some type of flooding, he noted. "We've gotten so much water this year, there isn't anywhere for it to go."

Nowhere to go, except into residents' basements. A home at 19 Mabel Road reportedly had to be evacuated Sunday night when the basement threatened to collapse, according to neighbors.

The National Weather Service reported up to 2è inches of rain fell across southern Mercer County in four hours. Other areas, such as Sharon, received about an inch.

Robinson said supervisors have scheduled a special meeting Thursday night to discuss road damage.

Wheatland escaped the brunt of the deluge, Mayor Thomas Stanton said Monday, although the borough building got flooded with "about 3 or 4 inches of water."

"The water came in the back door, the side door and the kitchen door," Stanton said, adding that many officials were already on hand for a concert that had been scheduled at the gazebo, but was moved inside.

"It was just too much too quick," Stanton said. "Most of it was from the downspouts, but some of it came off the hill."

Stanton said a few residents had flooded basements.

West Middlesex also reported several flooded roads and homes, but Mayor David George couldn't be reached for comment Monday night.
