Oak Grove Wesleyan Methodist Church, 8 Oak Grove Road, will celebrate the 150th anniversary of its founding with special observances Aug. 9 and 10. A division occurred in 1843 in the Methodist Episcopal Church in this country, caused mainly by a difference of opinion regarding the issue of slavery. Those who considered slavery a moral evil organized themselves into a new sect, under the name Wesleyan Methodists. Oak Grove Church can trace its beginning back to 1853. A group organized itself May 28 of that year, and the first place of worship mentioned was the Fairview schoolhouse. |
