2 hurt in hit-and-run crash, Farrell man accused of DUI

Two Sharon residents were injured after their car was hit Sunday afternoon by a car driven by an alleged drunken driver, Sharon police said.

Motorist Karen Porterfield, 54, and her passenger Lisa Porterfield, 17, both of 734 Meek St., were treated at UPMC Horizon, Farrell, after their car was hit head-on by a car driven by Vernon L. Hawkins, 39, of 841 Wallis Ave., Farrell, police said.

Police said the westbound Hawkins car tried to turn from East State Street onto Jefferson Avenue and hit the Porterfield car, which was stopped at the traffic light.

Hawkins got out of his car briefly but then drove off, police said.

Police said they found Hawkins a short time later driving in the 800 block of Wallis Avenue.

Hawkins was charged with drunken driving, driving under suspension, causing an accident with injury and driving on the wrong side of the road.
