Family stymied in transplant bid

By Kristen Garrett

The Swartz family is living with a mixture of disappointment and hope as they search for a bone marrow donor for one member of the family.

Sam Swartz, 44, Neshannock Township, Lawrence County, is in the accelerated stages of leukemia and needs a bone marrow transplant. Unable to find a match on the National Bone Marrow Foundation's registry, family members, including 21 first cousins, were tested.

Swartz's cousin, Lori Bible of Hermitage, was a match in five of the six comparison areas. Swartz said his doctor was comfortable with the match because the major cells were the same.

"Everything that had to match, that needed to match, was there," Swartz said.

Swartz's wife, Billy Jean, and their four children, Josh, 24, Nicole, 18, Ryan, 16 and Sammie Jo, 14, were preparing for the transplant when they got bad news Friday.

The insurance company decided they would not pay for the transplant because the match wasn't sufficient.
