Officials hoping feds
will come to rescue

Local municipal officials are evaluating damage caused by consistent downpours in Mercer County last month and are hoping for a federal disaster declaration that bring funds for repairs.

Officials at The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh confirmed after the July 21 storm that damage was widespread. The worst, according to the weather service, was reported in Jefferson Township and portions of Venango County.

Richard Brandes, Jefferson Township superviser chairman, said the township had "a lot of work to do" and estimated it will cost between $200,000 and $250,000 to repair destroyed areas.

"FEMA was out looking at the damage and doing assessments. I doubt we'll get anything from them, though we should," Brandes said. "Five miles across the state line a group of counties in Ohio have aid coming in."
