Police arrest driver
after 23-mile chase

A New Castle man was arraigned Friday before District Justice Samuel Battaglia of Lawrence County on charges stemming from a high-speed, 23-mile chase through Lawrence and Mercer counties, police said.

Authorities said the chase began at about 1 a.m. Friday, when New Castle police tried to stop a vehicle being driven recklessly by Louis Mielke Jr., 21. After speeding from Grove Street onto state Route 158, the Mielke vehicle continued into Mercer County at speeds of 90 to 95 mph, police said. State police from Mercer tried to stop the vehicle, but the pursuit continued south on U.S. Route 19 at 105 mph, they said.

Police said they laid spike strips across Millburn Road to stop the vehicle in Springfield Township.

In addition to several traffic citations, police said Mielke was also charged with fleeing or attempting to elude police, drunken driving and careless and reckless driving. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday morning.
