Council eyes options for sewer expansion

Objections from Fairgrounds Road residents haven't changed Stoneboro council members' plans to run sewer lines through their neighborhood, but they may reconsider the way they do it.

With many of the residents at Wednesday's council meeting, the possibilities were discussed, but no conclusions reached.

After presenting a letter titled "Public Response to Stoneboro City Council's sewer project plan," William Kirk said simply, "There is widespread resistance to the sewer project on Fairgrounds Road."

Councilman Henry Pierce was the first to respond, saying, "It seems to me that we have a responsibility to provide sewage to all the residents of the borough. So why don't we run the main line out Mercer and Fairgrounds roads and anyone who wants to tap in, within the first six months, we will pay for the grinder pump. After that, it's their responsibility.

"That way, we would at least be making it available to them," he said.

Council has been saying all along that it intends to buy the grinder pumps required for the system and give them to the residents, but Councilman Garner Lloyd objects to the borough buying any grinder pumps.

"We do not manufacture grinder pumps, we are not responsible for grinder pumps. If we put them in, we will be responsible for them," he said.

He suggested that maybe the project could be done with one central grinder pump for the neighborhood.

"Isn't that the idea?" asked Councilman Jim Carone. "We buy the grinder pumps and give them to the people. They would be theirs."

The responsibility for upkeep and repairs would fall on the property owner, Carone implied.

Mayor Tom Wygant had another idea. He felt that a lift station might be the way to go.

"You wouldn't have to have a big one," he said.

"We've indicated that we are not ready to do anything at this time," Pierce said. He suggested that all the ideas be taken to project engineer Al Wodzianski for study.

Lloyd said, "I'd like to see Al quote us some accurate figures, grinder pumps versus lift station.

The discussion of whether to force Fairgrounds Road residents to tap into the sewer line once it's in place will continue.
