Man, 22, drowns in Slippery Rock Creek

A 22-year-old man drowned at about 1:45 p.m. Wednesday in the Kennedy Mills area of Slippery Rock Creek in Slippery Rock Township, Lawrence County, state police said.

Police said Matthew Andrew Provan, 22, of Monongahela, Pa., and an unidentified Lawrence County man were together when Provan, who police said was not a good swimmer, entered the creek.

He immediately began struggling and attempts to save him by his friend and an 18-year-old passerby were unsuccessful, police said.

Provan's body was discovered at about 4 p.m. by divers from the Shenango Township, Lawrence County, Volunteer Fire Department wedged between rocks in about 18 feet of water 50 feet downstream, or east, of where he went under. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Lawrence County Deputy Coroner Rich Johnson.
