The first human case of West Nile virus reached Mercer County, the state health secretary reported Friday. An 11-year-old local girl tested positive for West Nile virus, bringing Pennsylvania's total human cases to 28. Her location was not released. She has since recovered and was probably outside when she was bitten by a mosquito carrying the virus, said Jessica Seiders, Department of Health spokesperson. About two to three weeks ago, the girl went to her doctor complaining of mild flu-like symptoms, and the doctor recommended she get tested for West Nile virus. People with mild infections may experience fever, headache, body aches, skin rash and swollen lymph glands, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. |
