Cash-strapped district recalls teachers

By Larissa Theodore

Last year, soon after Reynolds School Directors learned of a $2 million budget shortfall, the school district started cutting back.

To get out from under the deficit, created in the late '90s when the school district began spending more than it took in, directors were forced to follow a strict recovery plan, one that called for laying off 13 teachers and 10 teacher aides.

The furloughs saved the district $1 million a year in salaries and benefits; however, federal money to reduce class sizes is bringing back some of the laid off teachers.

In July, Reynolds school directors recalled two teachers who were laid off last year. John Tofani, social studies teacher, and Michael Mazzocco, music teacher and band director, were recalled.

On Wednesday, directors also reinstated the following elementary school teachers who lost their jobs from furloughs: Jeffrey DeJulia, at a salary of $36,712; Daniel Hayne, $36,712; and Sarah King, $36,612.
