Proposed mowing ordinance doesn't address complaint

Hermitage city officials have proposed a new ordinance regulating the height of grass, but it would not address complaints about a property on Brandywine Drive.

The current ordinance says grass must be kept below 8 inches high on a property that also has a structure, but City Manager Gary Hinkson said that rule is unfair for some properties.

He said the city has densely populated areas, and rural areas with few houses, making it difficult to come up with guidelines fair to both situations.

He noted that, under the current ordinance, someone with a house on 40 acres would be required to mow all 40 acres.

Officials are proposing to keep the 8-inch limit, but with a host of exceptions, including natural landscaping, ornamental grasses and farming.
