Surviving drive-in theater
attracts families these days

Patrons of the theater made themselves comfortable, laughed with their friends and families, snacked on pizza and hot dogs and waited for Mother Nature to dim the house lights.

Though the tides of time have passed most drive-in theaters by, the Elm Road Twin Drive-in in Warren still opens its gates every day in the summer, showing feature films to families, teenagers and movie fans of all ages.

Theater owner Bob Hreno has seen plenty of movies in his time. His father built the drive-in, and Hreno can still remember the first movie that played on the big screen in August 1950.

"It was called 'Luxury Liner' and it had George Brent and Jane Powell," he said.

The theater was built during the heyday of the drive-in and proved to be a popular hangout for families and teens alike over the next few decades.
