Sondra Caszatt is perplexed by Mercer County Community Transit's refusal to allow her to bring her scooter onto the transit buses.

"I thought the transit was for handicapped people," she said.

Ms. Caszatt, of Grove City, said she has used transit buses for years to go to doctor's appointments, the pharmacy, the bank and the grocery store. Aside from a friend who takes her shopping once a month, she has no other means of transportation she said, adding she was not given a reason when told that her scooter was being banned from transit.

Bill Jones, transit manager for MCCT, said the agency does not have a blanket ban on scooters and other motorized wheelchairs, but there have been cases where riders who have some of these models have been denied service.

Some people have been banned for their inability to operate the scooters, he said. In one case, a person in a scooter knocked down another woman on a bus. In another, a woman drove down the steps of the bus.
