More progress reported at talks

Wednesday marked another day of all-out labor contract negotiations between Wheatland Tube Co. and striking union workers, but a final accord remained elusive.

Both sides have said there would be a news blackout on information as long as there was progress during talks.

Company Vice President Bill Kerins did say progress was made on some issues Wednesday and the company would be waiting today for a response from the union. Negotiations will continue based on that response, he said.

Wednesday was the second consecutive day of long talks between the pipe and tube company and striking United Steelworkers Local 1660. The local represents 470 production and maintenance workers at the company's Wheatland plant.

Wednesday's bargaining session began shortly after 1 p.m. and continued until shortly after 6.

Local 1660 struck the Wheatland pipe and tube plant April 28 when its previous contract expired.

Sticking points in the negotiations are health-care insurance premiums and co-payments and pensions.
