Car burglar ordered
to repay his victims

Many victims in a rash of burglaries are entitled to restitution for damage to their vehicles, but the man responsible won't be spending any time in jail.

Brad Andrew Laverty, 24, of 1120 Weitz Ave., Farrell, was sentenced Thursday by Mercer County Common Pleas Judge Michael J. Wherry on charges of theft from a motor vehicle, possession of drug paraphernalia and forgery. He was sentenced to 3 months in the Intermediate Punishment Program, where he must undergo drug screenings. Then he will serve 39 months' probation for the theft charge.

Laverty was ordered to pay court costs on both the drug paraphernalia and forgery charges. He was also given 4 years' probation to run concurrently with the sentence on the forgery charge.

Laverty was ordered to pay restitution to the approximately 20 people whose vehicles were damaged and items taken from inside. A clerk in Wherry's office Thursday afternoon did not have the total cost of the restitution.

"Is there any good reason why I shouldn't send you to the state?" Wherry asked Laverty. Wherry noted that Laverty "caused a lot of grief" with his rash of vehicle break-ins.
