Developing athletic complex a slow sport

Springfield Township supervisors are waiting to give final approval of plans for a sports complex near Prime Outlets at Grove City until they see definite numbers concerning the cost of upgrading nearby sewage lift stations.

But Born2Run sports complex developer Tom Linton of Hermitage is getting a little impatient with the process and blames township engineer Dan Goncz of Gannett Fleming, Pittsburgh, for being slow to provide the numbers.

"This particular situation was slowed down because Springfield Township's engineer did not do what he should have done prior to that meeting. He's had over two months to complete his report," said Linton, whose company Michelle Properties LLC is developing the 32-acre complex on state Route 208.

"It's also unfortunate, instead of (township officials) saying, 'OK, we dropped the ball here, what options do we have to make sure this moves forward without delay... Instead we'll table it for two more weeks.' I would hope they understand that every day that goes by causes a risk in the timing of the development when we're trying to open it in April of 2004," Linton said.

"Two weeks in September could cost you two weeks in January," he said. "Obviously if the weather doesn't start cooperating, it will probably be a moot point."

Township administrator Barb Brown said that the engineer faxed the cost estimate late Tuesday afternoon before the supervisors meeting, but she didn't see it there until Wednesday morning.
