Vacant house fire called suspicious

No one was injured in an early morning house fire Friday, Assistant Fire Chief David Coffy said.

Coffy said he is calling the fire suspicious, since a car was seen leaving the scene of the fire. The state fire marshal has been called in to investigate, Coffy said.

Police Chief Dan Faustino said police were patroling the area around an auto wrecking shop at about 2:30 a.m. when they noticed smoke and saw flames engulfing the back porch of the home at 741 Collar Price Road.

Since there were no hydrants in the area, nearby Vienna, Hartford, Fowler and Hubbard fire departments brought tankers to assist Brookfield firefighters, Coffy said.

Damage to the house, which was vacant but had recently been purchased, was estimated to be $75,000; the structure was a total loss, Coffy said.
