Young, hot, electable; Portman is tapped
for teen mag's top 10

Teenage girls across the United States who read COSMOgirl! magazine will be drooling this month over actor Josh Hartnett, American Idol star Justin Guarini, world-champion skier Jeremy Bloom and Mercer Mayor Christopher Portman.

Yes, that's right. Mercer's young mayor has once again landed the small town in America's spotlight.

Portman was chosen by COSMOgirl! -- think Cosmopolitan for the teenage reader -- as one of the 10 most eligible college men in America.

"Who would have thought being the mayor of Mercer would land you that," Portman mused. "This has been such a surprise. I never would have thought in a million years that any of this would have ever happened."

Mercer's 21-year-old mayor learned he was chosen to grace the pages of the magazine earlier this summer while on vacation in North Carolina with his family.

Portman said he got a call from his secretary who said that COSMOgirl! wanted him to make an appearance. Portman said he was a little confused about what was going on and called the writer of the feature, Caroline Waxler, who explained that he had been selected as one of the most eligible college bachelors.
