of ways it helps By Kristen Garrett Herald Staff Writer
It's been a tough year financially for many local people, but United Way of Mercer County officials are hoping some new initiatives will make their 2003 fund-raising campaign a success. The goal for the campaign, which kicks off next Thursday with the annual Restaurant Revue, is $1 million, said James Micsky, executive director of the United Way. That's 5 percent more than the 2002 campaign raised, he said. United Way representatives are trying to raise community awareness about the agency's importance, said Rex W. Knisley, campaign chairman. He said months ago the agency began holding luncheons for retailers, school superintendents and people in industry. A Women's Leadership Initiative is one new way the United Way is trying to raise money and learn what services are needed. Knisley said 25 local women who are community leaders, philanthropists and are interested in helping the community were asked to serve on a steering committee. They were given the task of identifying other women who are community-minded to be a part of the initiative, he said. |
