Taft visit draws
mixed reception

Gov. Bob Taft stopped by Paul C. Bunn Elementary School on Wednesday to kick off his OhioReads Volunteer Recruitment Week, but not everyone was singing praises of the visit.

Taft praised Superintendent Ben McGee and administrators for helping Youngstown School District come out of academic emergency status. He also praised the school's principal, Maria Pappas, parents, teachers and community leaders for their cooperation and tenacity that helped to raise fourth-grade proficiency scores 24 percent.

"There are no good unskilled jobs out there ... but we have to expect every child to learn to read," Taft said.

The OhioReads program is the governor's initiative to improve reading skills of kindergarten through fourth-grade students, so they may pass the reading section of the fourth-grade proficiency test. The program brings volunteer reading tutors into the classroom to assist students with reading.

Taft encouraged area businesses and employers to partner with Mahoning Valley Reads, which includes Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties, and recruit more tutors because "we cannot rest until every child in the state (can read) and can make their dreams a reality."
