Michael Swiger's
parole fate nears

One of the brothers convicted of beating to death Roger "Butch" Pratt in June 1988 will be considered for release from prison later this month, a spokesperson for the Ohio Parole Board said.

Michael Swiger, 35, was sentenced to serve 21 to 53 years in state prison for his role in the crime. His older brother, Edward, 37, was sentenced to life in prison for his part.

A parole hearing for Michael Swiger was held Thursday, the spokesperson said, adding that a decision will be made by the end of the month.

If paroled in Ohio, Swiger would immediately have to serve a 1- to 5-year sentence in Pennsylvania. He was convicted of arson in connection with the May 1988 fire that destroyed the Old Town furniture store in Greenville.

The Swigers were convicted of beating to death Pratt, a graduate of Thiel College, after they had lured him to a remote road in Hudson, Ohio. His body was found in a shallow grave on a farm north of Jamestown. The brothers were afraid Pratt, who was 22, would implicate Edward in the store arson and two 1987 fraternity house burglaries at Thiel.
