Blue Streak fans raise funds in marathon ride

Associated Press

Thirteen people who braved a 12-hour ride on the sixth-oldest wooden roller coaster in the country raised $7,000 to keep the 66-year-old thrill ride running.

The roller coaster enthusiasts, one from as far away as Maine, also set a record for the most circuits on the half-mile Blue Streak at Conneaut Lake Park, completing 300 trips on Saturday.

The marathon lasted from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. with a half-hour break. The coaster only stopped for paying customers or to let participants grab a bite to eat or use the bathroom.

The park has struggled since it closed in 1995 and 1996 when two of its three private owners went bankrupt.

Conneaut Lake Park took out two loans and sold a billboard so it could raise $225,000 and open Memorial Day weekend for its 111th season.

The park had hoped to draw enough visitors this season to make $2.7 million and break even, but rainy weather and the blackout that hit the Northeast forced it to close nine times during its 65-day season.
