Trash truck check turns up safety, vehicle violations

Trash truck inspections were conducted Tuesday at Tri-County Transfer Station in Pine and Liberty townships to check compliance with state environmental and safety laws, the Department of Environmental Protection said Friday.

Although no environmental violations were found during inspections this week, PennDOT cited numerous trash trucks for being overweight. State police also cited numerous trucks for mechanical and safety problems. All citations were against the haulers and not the facilities.

Regional Director Kelly Burch said the inspections were made to help improve compliance with state environmental regulations and traffic safety laws.

As part of the inspections, DEP checked for proper licenses as required under Act 90 and found no violations. Act 90, enacted in 2002, requires all municipal and residual waste haulers using waste disposal and processing facilities in Pennsylvania to obtain authorization from the department to use those facilities.

"We continue these inspections in northwestern Pennsylvania because we want to get unsafe trash hauling trucks off the highways. Apparently, our safety message is being heard," Burch said.
