6 people hurt in 2-car crash on State Street

Six people were hurt in a two-car accident at 5:25 p.m. Thursday in the 5500 block of East State Street, Hermitage police said.

Police said motorist Joy Custer, 34, of 3097 Valley Road, Mercer, and her passengers, Kenneth Custer, 33, Sonya Custer, 8, and Kenneth Custer, 9, were taken to local hospitals, as were the people in the other car, driver Stephen Krist, 83, of 468 Dutch Lane, Hermitage, and his passenger Jeanette Henderson, 72, of the same address.

Police said Ms. Custer veered her westbound car into the eastbound lane to avoid hitting a stopped car from behind. Instead of hitting the stopped car, the Custer car collided with the oncoming Krist car, police said.

Police were unsure of the extent of anyone's injuries, but neither UPMC Horizon, Farrell, nor the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System had a record of treating anyone.

Ms. Custer was cited, police said.
