West Penn owners sell company, ending 80-plus year bottling run

After serving more than 80 years of business in the community, a local bottling company in Farrell has closed its doors.

West Penn Nehi Bottling Co., 600 E. Broadway Ave., Farrell, was purchased in June by American Beverage Corp. American Beverage, which delivers out of Youngstown, is headquartered just outside of Pittsburgh and has plants in Pennsylvania, Arizona and New Hampshire. Its main products are fruit drinks, spring water and cocktail mixes.

West Penn Nehi bottled and distributed RC Cola, Diet Rite Cola, 7-Up and Frosty Rootbeer. West Penn Nehi's fountain service was sold to Polar Bear Inc., 1471 N. Perry Highway, Mercer.

West Penn's leaders, John "Phil" Schmidt, president, and Karl Torma, vice president, decided to sell the business because they are nearing retirement and felt it was time to move on, Torma said.

"We had an offer from American Beverage Corporation to buy us out so we took it," Torma said.
