New transit system in place, but not everyone is on board

Brookfield Township trustees said since the township already offers transit service to its senior citizens, there really wasn't an overwhelming need to join up with the new Niles-Trumbull Transit System.

The new system began serving Liberty, Niles, Howland, Weathersfield, Vienna, McDonald and Cortland residents Monday. Other residents in the county are to begin using the system Oct. 20.

The demand-responce service will allow people to use public transportation to get to work, medical visits, job training and school.

It runs from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends.

The seven communities to receive the service early kicked in $1 for every person, which was their local match. The county matched with $150,000, which includes $30,000 for the Ohio Department of Transportation's share.

Brookfield Township Trustee Phil Schmidt said a letter was sent to the township outlining how much the township would have to pay to get in on the program -- about $10,000 a year. Residents would have to pay for each trip.
