It's worth repeating: Don't drive through water on road

Motorists in the Mercer County area have seen their share of problems this summer with all the rain that has fallen and there is a likelihood of dangerous driving conditions today with the arrival of Hurricane Isabel.

"We urge motorists to postpone any unnecessary trips during a significant storm," Terri Rae Anthony, AAA safety adviser, said in a news release. "If you must be on the highway, monitor the traffic and weather report so that you can take the safest route."

Motorists should avoid driving across roadways with standing or moving water. "Drivers are overconfident because of the size and weight of their vehicle. Your car is buoyant and will tend to float as the water rises," Anthony said. "The water will lift your wheels away from the pavement and cause you to lost control of your vehicle in as little as six inches of rushing water."

AAA recommends drivers travel at a speed that will allow them to manage visibility, reaction time and space between other vehicles as well as watch for debris, limbs or trees in the road.
