USW, steelmakers bolster

campaign to retain tariffs

Yoo-hoo. Oh, yoo-hoo, President Bush. The United Steelworkers and most American steel producers want you to keep tariffs in place on imported steel.

That's putting it politely.

Both groups have cranked up a campaign this week to get Bush to leave alone the tariffs he imposed on imported steel 18 months ago. On Tuesday the USW and steel producers launched a television and radio ad campaign urging Bush to keep the tariffs. The timing isn't a coincidence.

Today the U.S. International Trade Commission is scheduled to release two reports on the tariffs. Bush can accept, reject or modify the ITC recommendations at any time.

"We're very confident the ITC will give a favorable ruling to the president,'' said Charlie Rice, who heads the USW's "Stand Up for Steel'' program in northwestern Pennsylvania.
