Revitalization costs trimmed by half

The $6 million price tag of a downtown revitalization project in Grove City has been pared down to a little over half that cost by a borough council subcommittee.

According to revitalization subcommittee chairman and Councilman John Inman, the panel cut the scope of the 1.65-mile project to about six blocks as the result of meetings during the summer. The subcommittee is made up of two council members, several downtown business owners and Grove City Revitalization, Inc. members, Borough Manager Terry Farren and borough solicitor Tim Bonner.

Some members of council have been complaining that the plan to put a new face on the borough's downtown was too expensive.

Streets to be improved would include West Main from Center to Broad, Broad Street from Main to Blair, and Blair from Broad to Center, Inman said.

Included in the project are new streetlights, parking, signage, trees and sidewalks.

"It's about $3.1 million and those of course are estimates," Inman said. He added that to fund the project, the split is still about half from federal and state grants, and the other half from the borough and the private sector.

Inman added that since the borough gave Akron-based consultant E.G. & G. Inc. the go-ahead Monday to search for funds, that split could change, depending on what funds are found.
