Family that fled from Isabel

discovers home condemned

Sharon Mayor David O. Ryan's daughter and her family learned the hard way that you should never say never.

Missy Scott, her husband Dennis and their children live in Kitty Hawk, N.C. Now the family has temporarily relocated back to the Shenango Valley because their house -- in fact their entire neighborhood -- has been condemned in the wake of Hurricane Isabel.

The Scotts, who live a block away from the ocean, decided to come to Pennsylvania last Wednesday because they didn't want to take any chances with the children, Mrs. Scott said. The couple has three children, Ben, 4; Max, 18 months; and Grace, 5 weeks.

However, they didn't pack everything before they left.

"We've evacuated so many times and nothing's ever happened," Mrs. Scott said. "Every other time we've packed everything up. This time I was just like, 'Let's just go home.' We didn't really prepare, and we got hit. Doesn't it figure?"

Though the children are young, Mrs. Scott said Ben sort of understood that something was going on while her husband boarded up their shutters. She said her son asked, "Is there an emergency?"
