Couple feels lucky N.C. home was spared

Chris and Chrissy Stanfa have seen their share of storm-related damage. But the Stanfas, Greenville natives who have lived in Kill Devil Hills, N.C., for almost three years, had never seen anything comparable to the damage caused last week by Hurricane Isabel, which walloped much of the East Coast with sustained winds of up to 120 mph.

"We've had nor'easters, but nothing even remotely close to the amount of damage that happened down here," Stanfa, 28, said Tuesday from the family's home. "It just looks like there were tornadoes all over the place."

Mrs. Stanfa, 26, a 1995 Greenville High graduate, said the storm washed away the beach in some areas near their home, many swimming pools were filled with sand and some roads have huge sand dunes right in the middle of them.

Fortunately for them, the Stanfas and their 19-month-old son Logan were in the cozy confines of Greenville when Isabel wreaked her havoc. And fortunately for them, the Stanfas' house was spared the brunt of the force of Isabel, suffering only very minor shingle and siding damage, Stanfa said.
