County official placed on unpaid leave

A Trumbull County official's job was spared Friday when county commissioners voted 2-1 to place him on unpaid administrative leave.

Anthony Delmont, county maintenance director, has been implicated in a scheme that defrauded county taxpayers out of more than $88,000 over three years, prosecutors said.

He has not been charged.

Barry Jacobson, the former mayor of Lyndhurst, Ohio, and co-owner of Envirochemical Inc., pleaded guilty Thursday to one count each of bribery and complicity to theft in office. Both are third-degree felonies.

"This investigation began around July and August 2002," Chris Becker, assistant county prosecutor, said Monday. "We anticipate there will continue to be investigations into this matter."

Becker said the total amount of the overcharges could be as high as $200,000.

According to an affidavit, around March 2000 Delmont allegedly asked Jacobson to write two checks to Delmont's wife, Karen, in an attempt to "improperly influence" Delmont, with the expectation that Jacobson would continue to sell janitorial supply products to the county.
