By Patrecka F. Adams Herald Staff Writer Tim Filipovich, Addison Elementary School principal, wants to see proficiency test scores go up, he told the Brookfield school board Wednesday. Filipovich showed how he and his staff are working to improve students' scores. "The elementary school's mission statement is 'Learn for Life'," he said. "We really have driven home the idea of that mission statement. It's a guiding principle for us." The state superintendent named Addison a 2003 "School of Promise." Filipovich told the board that fourth-graders fared well in writing, surpassing the 80 percent passing grade in 2002 with 84 percent this year. In reading, however, fourth-graders slipped from 82 percent last year to 76 percent this year; in math, students fell from 80 percent to 68 percent; in citizenship, scores dropped from 79 percent to 65 percent; in science, students stayed pretty stable, scoring 67 percent in 2002 and 65 percent this year. These results led Filipovich and other school officials to come up with ways to get students achieving the 75 percent state-mandated goals in subjects across the board. |
