Room gets look of 1900s By Kristen Garrett Herald Staff Writer
Groups gathering in the H.M. Willson Room of F.H. Buhl Club in Sharon will find it refurbished, looking much like the original room of the early 1900s. The Willson Trust donated $50,000 to redo the lighting, carpeting and furniture in the 1,200-square-foot room. The trust was started by Herbert McAdam Willson, who was the manager of the J.M. Willson and Sons furniture store. In his 1926 will Willson left $100,000 that was to be invested for 25 years after his death and then used for the benefit of Sharon-area youth. Willson's great-nephew, Jack Willson of Hickory, N.C., is president of the trust. He visited the remodeled room on Friday, along with the trust vice president, Jim Feeney, and treasurer Wally Thompson. "H.M. Willson loved kids," Willson said. He said it's nice that the room was completed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Buhl Club. Jeff Valentino, executive director of the Buhl Club, said the Willson Room is used frequently by the community. A ladies bridge group uses the room two days a week, and the Association for Children with Learning Disabilities uses it to tutor students. The room is also used for lifeguard classes, organizational meetings, bridal and baby showers, and seminars and classes through UPMC Horizon, Valentino said. |
