Repairing what's broken

Sexual abuse. Gender identity. Drugs.

These are several issues today's youth may face -- issues that perhaps someone growing up 50 years ago never had to confront.

But there are other issues like temptation, forgiveness and relationships that have weathered the test of time. Familiar or not, learning the root of these problems is what mends the situation, said Wendy and Phil Coy, founders of innerACTS, a resource of faith-based training and strategies.

The Coys, authors of the book "Tough Stuff," hosted a seminar Tuesday in Farrell, offering teaching strategies to leaders, students and volunteers involved in youth or young adult outreach. About 20 people attended the seminar, sponsored by E.R.A.S.E. anti-drug coalition and Mercer County Behavioral Health Commission. The Rev. Wilbert White, an ordained minister, was another presenter who spoke on cultural perspectives. Rev. White resides in Sharon with his wife of 15 years and three children.

The Coy's covered strategies for dealing with difficult topics from a faith-based perspective and looked at what to say or what not to say when dealing with difficult issues.

"Kids are confused. They're looking for a voice," Phil Coy said.
