People under 21: Don't even think about trying to buy beer, wine or other alcoholic beverages in Brookfield.

The person ringing up your purchase might be an undercover policeman.

Deterring underage drinking and arresting drunk drivers are key goals of the "Cops in Shops" program, which will be held Friday through Sunday at participating township retailers.

"Cops" doesn't target retailers; it focuses on people trying to buy alcohol illegally.

The program is funded through a $4,973 grant from the Ohio Department of Public Safety. This is the first year the Brookfield department has been awarded the grant, and the funds will be used to pay officers who participate in the program.

The yearlong program will coincide with major teenage events, such as prom, spring break and football games.

"We're looking to deter or arrest people trying to purchase alcohol under age 21 with false IDs or no IDs," patrolman Jay First said. They'll also be watching out for drunk drivers and adults who purchase alcohol for teens.
