Those who are lamenting the loss of Light Up Night in downtown Sharon can take heart because it appears the annual event will continue.

It seemed there was no money to hold the festivities which normally take place the Thursday before Thanksgiving. However downtown businesses are banding together to continue the tradition for the eighth year.

"The Sharon business people are proactive, and when we realized that this could be the end of a tradition, we realized it was a call to action," said Mark Jubelirer, co-owner of Reyers Shoe Store.

"Beautiful downtown is even more beautiful during the holidays when it's lighted up," Jubelirer said. "There's a community of people out there who want this tradition to continue."

Jubelirer said he began contacting city business owners and the response has been good.

The city of Sharon also is planning to give money to help the event, Council President Fred Hoffman said. He said he has a verbal agreement from council to donate $5,000. Council is expected to approve a budget transfer later this month.

"I can't tell you how appreciative we are. It's just a wonderful thing to see in a small community," Jubelirer said.
