Council wants opinions about closing crossing

Wheatland council has decided it wants a little more time before acting on a request by Norfolk Southern Railroad to close the Mill Street crossing.

Council took no formal action Wednesday, but asked that a letter be sent seeking input from businesses in the area of the crossing. Those concerns will then be addressed Nov. 3. Council also is asking anyone wishing to comment on the request to attend that work session or the next regular meeting on Nov. 5.

One business, Paramount Games, previously sent a letter to council that was read Wednesday, stating that closing the Mill Street crossing "would be a major inconvenience."

Closing the crossing would make the road a dead-end on both sides of the tracks.

Donald Stinedurf, council vice president, said he understood the concept of an alternative route and the effect it might have should the crossing be closed, but he emphasized that council should talk to other businesses in the area, including Wheatland Tube, to determine the impact, if any, the closing would have on them.

On Monday, another railroad official told council that in the past Norfolk Southern has given money to communities that agreed to close crossings. George Little, a trainmaster based out of the railroad's regional office, noted Wednesday that amount would be $6,000.
