Firefighter's parents remain in burn unit; funeral is set

The conditions of a West Middlesex couple badly burned in a house fire that mortally wounded their son have not changed.

John "Babe" Pollock, 74, of 18 Old Bedford Road, was listed in serious condition in the regional burn trauma unit at Akron Children's Hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said Saturday. While he was listed in critical condition Friday, the spokeswoman said there is virtually no difference between the designations.

Pollock's wife, Shirley, 74, was listed in critical condition in the burn unit at Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh, a spokeswoman said.

The Pollocks' son, Mark, 46, of the same address, was pronounced dead on arrival at UPMC Horizon, Farrell, said Mercer County Coroner J. Bradley McGonigle III. Mark Pollock died of smoke inhalation, McGonigle said.

Mark Pollock was a Shenango Township volunteer firefighter and a former West Middlesex firefighter. The fire departments are looking to hold a memorial service for him, but plans are not final, said Shenango Fire Chief Ron Ziglear.

The departments will host a luncheon following the funeral at Shenango's Station One on state Route 18, he said.
